Professional Responsibility Course

The course will consist of three (3) segments each focusing on making licensees more aware of the optometry statute, rules associated with that statute, and other state and federal laws that can or do affect the licensee. The review segment will occur every year with the other two segments changing yearly.

This segment covers the basic of writing medication prescriptions. Also includes information related to use of EHR, calling in medications, refill guidelines, and special state or federal guidelines regarding security issues.

Segment 2: Controlled Substances, the DEA and your license

This segment will cover an array of issues related to the administration and prescribing of controlled substances. Topics covered will include:

  • What are controlled substances?
  • What steps are necessary to legally prescribe controlled substances?
  • When is a triplicate form necessary?
  • What are the requirements for keeping controlled substances in my office for office administration?
  • What rules/guidelines/recommendations exist regarding treating myself or my immediate family?
  • General guidelines/recommendations for working with pharmacy colleagues.
