Join UHCO’s newest Conference Director, Dr. Matt Kauffman, for our annual CE in San Antonio Conference this November.  Enjoy all the Riverwalk has to offer by staying on-site at the Westin Hotel and complete sixteen hours of COPE approved CE.  The agenda includes an array of topics presented by experts within the field.

Conference Protocols

Per state regulations, in-person events hosted by UHCO this Fall, will operate at 100% capacity and not require participants to wear a mask.  However, for the comfort and wellbeing of those in attendance, seating spacing will be increased to provide physical distancing and total attendance capacity will be limited.

 

If you are considering in-person attendance, UHCO strongly encourages participants to follow CDC recommendations:

We are committed to working with the Westin Riverwalk to create a healthy and safe environment for all participants.  Protocols in effect at the time of the conference will adhere to local, state and CDC regulations and guidelines.  Currently, seating spacing at the venue will be increased to provide for physical distancing. With limited seating available, please be advised:

 

  • Registration will remain open until all seats are filled.  Capacity limits may change based on the prevailing physical distancing guidelines.

SPEAKER INFORMATION

Matt Kauffman, OD, Conference Director

Dr. Kauffman received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. He attended the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO), where he earned his Doctor of Optometry. Afterwards, Dr. Kauffman completed a Residency in Cornea and Contact Lenses at the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Kauffman returned to Houston, Texas, and worked in a private practice fitting specialty contact lenses. He was also adjunct clinical faculty at the University of Houston College of Optometry. Dr. Kauffman later joined UHCO as a full-time visiting assistant professor and now serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor and is the current Cornea and Contact Lens Service Director. He enjoys teaching in the Cornea and Contact Lens Service and performing research in the Visual Optics Institute. He also lectures and publishes on the topics of specialty contact lenses and corneal disease. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and the Scleral Lens Society, and a member of the American Optometric Association and Texas Optometric Association.

 


Joe DeLoach, OD, FAAO

Dr. DeLoach completed undergraduate training at Texas A&M University where he was designated an Academic Fellow in Biochemical Genetics. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) in 1981. As a private practitioner, Dr. DeLoach was Chief of Staff at Plano Eye Associates and also served as Medical Director of the EyeCare and Surgery Center of North Texas for almost two decades. Dr. DeLoach retired from UHCO in 2019, having served as the Clinical Director for the University Eye Institute’s Dallas and Fort Worth clinics. Dr. DeLoach served on the Texas Optometric Association’s Executive Committee and Board of Trustees in numerous capacities including President and Chairman of the Legal and Legislative Committee. He has won numerous awards including the Texas Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year and Optometrist of the Year, the Distinguished Service Award and fourteen President's Awards. Additionally, UHCO awarded him the Distinguished Alumni Award, William B. Pittman Award and Educator of the Year Award. Currently, Dr. DeLoach is the President of Practice Compliance Solutions and lectures extensively on topics related to glaucoma and ocular disease management, as well as, medical billing and coding, documentation of medical records and HIPAA compliance.

 


David Dinh, OD, FAAO

Dr. Dinh hails from Baton Rouge Louisiana where he received his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in Biological Sciences with a minor in Chemistry. He then received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry where he received multiple honors and awards from his colleagues and professors in recognition for his excellence in pediatrics as well as his leadership. Following optometry school, Dr. Dinh underwent an intensive residency in Ocular Disease at Cedar Springs Eye Clinic in Dallas Texas where he gained advanced training in the areas of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and dry eye syndrome. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and maintains active memberships in the Texas Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, the local Dallas County Optometric Society and the international Gold Key Honor Society.

 


Melanie Frogozo, OD, FAAO

Dr. Frogozo graduated from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO) in 2008 and completed her residency in Cornea and Contact Lens at UHCO in 2012. After residency, she was on faculty at the University of Iowa Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences where she focused on anterior segment disease and medically necessary contact lenses. In 2014, she returned to Texas and opened The Contact Lens Institute of San Antonio. Dr. Frogozo is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and the Scleral Lens Education Society, an advisory board member of the Gas Permeable Lens Institute, a committee member of the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Association, an associate member of the International Society of Contact Lens Specialists, and a member of the Texas Optometric Association. She is also an adjunct faculty member of the University of Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry and a contributing columnist for the leading source of contact lens information, Contact Lens Spectrum. Dr. Frogozo is a Diplomate candidate in the Cornea, Contact Lens, and Refractive Therapies section of the AAO. She is also a recipient of the San Antonio Business Journal’s 2017 40 under 40 Award. 

 


Swati Kumar, OD, FAAO

Dr. Kumar completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She then went on to study at the New England College of Optometry (NECO), where she earned her Optometric Doctorate and graduated magna cum laude in 2018. In 2019, Dr. Kumar completed her primary care/cornea and contact lens residency at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and was named Resident Preceptor of the Year. As an optometric intern, Dr. Kumar gained valuable experience serving a diverse range of patients at eye centers, VA clinics, and community health organizations throughout Iowa, Massachusetts, Florida, and California. She is well-versed in fitting patients for specialty contact lenses, including scleral, corneal glass permeable, orthokeratology, and specialty soft lenses. Dr. Kumar is one of the skilled optometrists practicing at Alamo Eye Care in San Antonio, Texas. Her mission is to help individuals living throughout the Texas Hill Country experience improved vision so they can live their lives more fully. She is a fellow candidate of the Scleral Lens Society and a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO). 

 


Nathan Lighthizer, OD, FAAO

Dr. Lighthizer is a graduate of Pacific University College of Optometry.  Upon graduation, he completed a residency in Family Practice Optometry with an emphasis in Ocular Disease through Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry.  Dr. Lighthizer has since joined the faculty at the Oklahoma College of Optometry and serves as the Chief of Specialty Care Clinics and the Chief of Electrodiagnostics Clinic.   In 2014, he founded and now heads the Dry Eye Clinic at the College of Optometry.  Also in 2014, he was named the Director of Continuing Education as well as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Care Services at the Oklahoma College of Optometry.  He is a founding member, and currently serves as Vice President, of the Intrepid Eye Society which is a group of emerging thought leaders in optometry.  He was named a member of PCON 250 – A list of the top 250 optometrists in the country who practice progressively, provide innovative patient care, conduct optometric research or excel in academia and share what they have learned with other optometrists to advance the profession.  Dr. Lighthizer lectures nationally on numerous topics, most notably advanced ophthalmic procedures, electrodiagnostics, and ocular disease.  

 


 Danica Marrelli, OD, FAAO

Dr. Marrelli received her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston College of Optometry (UHCO), and completed a residency in hospital-based optometry at the Baltimore VA Medical Center in Baltimore, MD.  She is currently a clinical professor at UHCO, where she serves as Assistant Dean of Clinical Education and staffs the glaucoma, retina and general eye disease clinics.  In the classroom, Dr. Marrelli teaches in the ocular pharmacology, glaucoma and case-based learning courses. Dr. Marrelli became a diplomate in the ocular disease section of the American Academy of Optometry in November 2009 and is the secretary of the Optometric Glaucoma Society.
