About The Benedict Professorship

The Benedict Professorship in Practice Management and Administration was established in 1982 by a generous endowment provided by Mr. Bill Benedict and Family. The purpose of the professorship is to provide education and consultation for optometrists, professional students, residents, faculty and staff in the areas of practice management and administration. The professorship is expressly intended to focus on the independent practice of optometry. 


Carl Spear, OD, MBA, FAAO

Dr. Spear completed his undergraduate education at Western Kentucky University and is a 1991 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Optometry at Birmingham.  Additionally, Dr. Spear completed a Residency in Primary Care Optometry/Ocular Disease at Northeastern State University College of Optometry, in Tahlequah Oklahoma and a Master’s in Business Administration at Auburn University. 


Dr. Spear was the founder and owner/operator of both Sight and Sun Eyeworks and Panhandle Vision Institute. He and his wife sold the seven location, vertically integrated, practices in 2016.


While growing his own practices, Dr. Spear also worked in a variety of industry settings including:

  • Senior Director, Professional Relations, Vision Group Holdings
  • Consulting Director, Professional Development and Program Implementation at Alcon
  • Assistant Professor of Optometry at Northeastern State University College of Optometry where he taught courses in laser therapy, systemic medications, and advanced therapeutic and diagnostic clinical procedures.
  • Southeast Region Director Growth and Development Vision Source
  • Director of Professional Relations, Novartis Ophthalmics
  • Director of Education and Vendor Relations Consultant, Vision Source
  • Center Director, Omega Health Systems


Currently, Dr. Spear serves as Senior Vice President of Eyecare, Luxottica North America. In addition to lecturing, writing and consulting, Dr. Spear is also active in the following organizations:

  • Member, Board of Directors, American Academy of Optometry
  • Commander of the 403 ASTS Medical Squadron at Keesler AFB
  • Member, The American Optometric Association
  • Member, Florida Optometric Association
  • Member, Think About Your Eyes, Board of Directors

  • Past Member, Florida Board of Optometry
  • Past Chair, Florida Board of Optometry Probable Cause Panel
